es — Cheated?!

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to finally get caught up on some personal business. The previous year had been a tough year for our family and over the last four months of 2008, we had a lot going on every day. So taking care of some of stuff that could take care of itself was the furthest thing from my mind.

I decided to open the banks statement from a couple of ancillary accounts that I have and balance those accounts. I knew that there hadn’t been any transactions on one particular account over the past year because I hadn’t used it at all. Therefore, when the statements came in over the past few months, I just set them aside to be dealt with at a later date.

As I expected, I opened up the first statement and everything seemed to be okay; nothing was out of the ordinary. It was a checking account and since it wasn’t an interest bearing account, the balance always remained constant from month to month. I opened up the second statement and once again, everything seemed to be alright. I opened the third statement and just stared at the page for a moment.

“What the…” I said rather loudly, “What the heck is this?!”

“What’s wrong?” Stephanie asked as she quickly came into the room.

“My bank account has been wiped out. It’s empty, nothing there, kaput!”

“What do you mean it’s been wiped out?” she asked as she looked at the statement.

“It’s just gone. I have nothing left.”

Teachable Moments

Published by Doug Veeder under Parenting, Stories

I was beginning to have one of those days as I stared down the hundredth driver who had just ignored my turn signal. I was trying to switch lanes so I could get to a local restaurant to pick up my wife. My turn signal had been on for the past fifteen minutes and every time I tried to move into the left lane, other drivers would do whatever they could to make sure that I did not get in front of them.

My kids were getting impatient in the backseat as I pulled the corner and headed for the intersection. As I looked around, I saw the sign that said my lane had to turn right and head back onto the highway. If I was unable to switch lanes, I was going to have to start this process all over again.

I rolled down my window and tried to get the attention of the woman in the car next to mine. When she finally looked at me and rolled down her window, I said, “I am sorry to bother you but I have been trying to get in your lane for the past fifteen minutes. I have to go straight across the intersection and I can’t in this lane. When the light turns green, can I get in front of you?”

“Sure, not a problem,” she said as she rolled up her window.
